The 5 beaches adjacent to the small fishing village of Itsamia, located at the edge of Mohéli host half of the population of female green turtles coming to lay on the island. Marine turtles are fully protected in Comoros. However, poaching for their meat and eggs remains a major threat. The local population organized itself into an association for the preservation of this species and to create a tourist attraction for visitors to the island.
