Tetouan (or Tittawin) is a city located in northern Morocco. It lies about 60 km east of the city of Tangier and 40 km south of the Spanish exclave of Ceuta (Sebta) and the Strait of Gibraltar in the far north of the Rif Mountains. In 2014 the city had 463,968 inhabitants. In 1913 Tetouan became the capital of the Spanish protectorate of Morocco. It remained as a capital until 1956, when Morocco regained its full independence.
